A massive winter storm ground New York City and surrounding suburbs to a halt Saturday, forcing a vehicle travel ban, closing or curtailing rail and subway service and shutting theaters as higher-than-forecast snowfall inundated the metropolitan area.

All bus routes – which were out of service as of Saturday afternoon – were back on line Sunday morning however continue to be on a modified Sunday schedule and with some detours.

Cuomo says the MTA will restore bus, subway and regional railroad service as conditions warrant throughout Sunday.

Along the DE and New Jersey coasts, icy floodwaters pushed inland by the storm were surging into neighborhoods.

Several Sunday flights at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports have been canceled.

Severe snowstorms are affecting more than 20 American states, with emergencies declared in 10 and at least nine deaths.

Alternate side of the street parking was suspended for the entire week to keep people from having to shovel out their cars and dump snow in the streets, but New York City schools would be open on Monday, de Blasio said. “We will do it in an orderly way so people have time to leave work and to get home”. Port Authority bridges and tunnels into New York City were also closing.

Outside the big cities, travelers were not faring much better, as thousands of accidents were reported.

One of the major concerns is flooding.

A blizzard warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. In North Carolina, a man whose auto had veered off an icy-covered road was arrested on charges of killing a motorist who stopped to help.

The problems prompted the closure of a long section of the turnpike from Breezewood to New Stanton in central Pennsylvania.

“Roads are clear for the most part”.
