Peres was hospitalized “after experiencing chest pains”, his spokesman said in a statement at the time.

Mr Peres, who was released from hospital last week after suffering a heart attack on January 14th, was conscious and the hospitalisation was a precautionary measure, Mr Peres’s aide Ayelet Frisch said. “Due to the diagnosis, his doctors decided that the 9th President will spend the night in hospital for observation and testing”, she said.

“He underwent a cardiac catheterization during which a narrowed artery was diagnosed which was then widened during the procedure”.

Peres served as prime minister for eight months after the assassination of premier Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.

Peres also thanked Obama for fighting to address climate change and for championing the cause of science during his tenure as president.

Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 following the signing of the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians.
