Michigan governor urges action on Detroit schools before court intervenes

Bailey continued, “We are on the front lines, fighting for our kids, families and communities”. Teachers in those schools are required to either show up or use a day of leave, the district said.

“There will be no further comment until we receive direction from the court”, said executive director of communications for DPS, Michelle A. Zdrodowski.

Nearly every public school in Detroit is closed Wednesday because so many teachers have called in sick that the schools can’t function.

Before going to Detroit, Earley served as the emergency manager in Flint.

On the same day that DPS filed its complaint, 90 percent of Detroit schools were closed as a result of teacher sickouts.

The hearing is at the Michigan Court of Appeals on the 14th floor of Cadillac Place, 3020 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

There is no legitimate public goal for slashing funds for public education and filing injunctions against teachers for protesting deplorable school conditions.

Steve Conn, the former president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers union – who was recently ousted after he was found guilty of misconduct in August – has indicated the group he leads, the Detroit Strike to Win Committee, will vote on a strike demand to remove Earley. Cass opened Monday morning with “an increased police presence to ensure that students, teachers and staff remained safe”, she said.

The teachers say they acted to make concerns about poor working conditions heard.

“We’re on our fourth emergency manager here”, Craig Thiel, a Citizens Research Council senior research associate, told The New York Times. “It’s an emergency situation”, Hansen said. Yesterday’s protest closed over 85 schools and followed last week’s efforts which shut down more than 60 and prompted visits to school sites by Mayor Mike Duggan and inspectors.

The claims of poorly maintained schools have triggered media reports that students have to wear jackets in class because the heat doesn’t work, along with allegations of black mold contamination and a general state of disrepair. “Teachers are fed up and have had enough”.
