The head of the United Nations atomic watchdog Yukiya Amano arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with President Hassan Rouhani, two days after Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers went into force.

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan said Monday the new sanctions targeting the country’s ballistic missile program would have no effect on missile development.

Alireza Nader, a researcher and Iran expert at the Washington offices of RAND Corporation, said, “Iran was never going to stop developing missiles”.

We now have entered into a new chapter in U.S.-Iran relations because both countries, whether they like it or not, will have to work together, at least for the next decade, to implement the deal. Obama claimed the release of US sailors who had strayed into Iranian territorial waters as another sign of program, as well as the release of a number of Americans held in prison by Iran.

As a result of the secret negotiations, Iran released four Iranian-Americans, including Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, and one American prisoner who, as Secretary Kerry said, were unjustly incarcerated. The US measures come shortly after the lifting of global sanctions over the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme.

In a White House speech on Iran Sunday, U.S. President Barack Obama vowed to act steadfastly on Iran’s “destabilizing behavior”, as “there remain profound differences” between the two countries.

On Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified Iran’s compliance with the terms of the JCPOA.

Emirates NBD, the largest bank in Dubai, declined to tell The Associated Press whether it was doing business with Iran now that nuclear-related sanctions have been lifted, citing a policy of confidentiality regarding potential or existing customers.

The five Americans were exchanged for seven Iranians accused or convicted in USA courts of economic crimes.

He also wrote in his letter that Iranian officials should take care that the counter party completely fulfils its obligations.

It drew a line under a standoff dating back to 2002 marked by failed diplomatic initiatives, ever-tighter sanctions, defiant nuclear expansion by Iran and threats of military action.

“The fact that the new sanctions were announced literally hours after many sanctions were halted on implementation day, seems to show that the United States government is being intentionally provocative and that it doesn’t feel the need to be trusted or taken seriously”, Mohammad Marandi, a professor with Tehran University, said.

“We have a rare chance to pursue a new path,’’ President Obama said of Iran negotiations in a televised statement Sunday
