‘The Revenant’ braves the blizzard with $16M at box office
Appropriately chilly survivalist drama “The Revenant” is on track for box office victory this weekend in the face of the blizzard. The latest installment of the space saga has grossed $1.9 billion globally, making it the No. 3 movie of all time. This weekend Oscar nom leader The Revenant will take the top spot, continuing the same pecking order that we saw throughout this past week.

Multi-awarded director Alejandro G. Inarritu’s recent frontier epic braved winter storm Jonas even though about 400 theaters wereforced to close in the East Coast and North Carolina.
Taking a dramatic drop at the box office this weekend is “Ride Along 2”, bringing in an estimated million.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens also moved up a spot -from third to second- as the blockbuster added another $14.3 million from 3,365 theaters. Starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, Ride Along 2 has grossed more than $59.1 million domestically.
“Jonas had an impact on what would have already have been some bland January openings, including Dirty Grandpa”, says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations “The Boy cost 10 million, so it will be fine”. But the second movie in the Universal franchise will sputter in with a three-day weekend of only about $12M to $12.8M to end the weekend with about $59M.
Zac Efron and Robert De Niro’s R-rated, Spring Break comedy Dirty Grandpa sputtered into fourth place.
Rounding out the top five were two new entries, comedy Dirty Grandpa and The Boy, about an American nanny who finds her English family’s boy is a life-sized doll. The Lionsgate release ought to finish the weekend with a total north of $11 million.
5th Wave, based on the best-selling book series, follows a young girl on the run after four waves of increasingly deadly alien attacks leave much of Earth decimated. Rotten Tomatoes critics didn’t like it, giving the picture only a 25 percent positive ratings. The Revenant earned an estimated $16 million from 3,711 theaters, a decrease of 50% from the previous weekend.

Chloe Grace Moretz’s starring role in the sci-fi fantasy The 5th Wave opened in sixth place with $10.7 million. Could have something to do with the fact that the average reading level of adults in the U.S.is 7th or 8th grade.
