VDOT appeals to Virginians: stay of the roads

Crews continue 24-hour operations in the subdivisions.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Saturday begged Virginians to avoid driving until the roads are clear. Up to 3 feet could pile up before the storm leaves the state.

VDOT and its contractors, 9,500 strong, are using all available resources, 13,000 pieces of equipment, including snow blowers, heavy equipment and all hired equipment to remove snow.

“As of this morning, we had dropped 69,000 tons of salt; 304,000 gallons of liquid salt and 14,000 tons of sand has been put on our streets”, McAuliffe said.

VDOT crews are on duty around the clock, with a goal to have all state-maintained roads passable – though in some cases, still snow-covered – within 48 hours after a storm ends.

But with expected freezing temperatures this evening, black ice could develop on interstate and primary roads, particularly on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is reminding residents that the state’s price gouging laws are in effect as a winter storm bears down on the state.

Among the items covered by the statute are water, food, generators, hotel rooms and tree removal services. At least one death has been attributed to the storm.

Walker says the trucks will focus on primary roads during the storm, then move on to secondary routes.

Hampton Roads District Administrator James Utterback said he is proud of the efforts of these crews.

The blizzard warning in Virginia also stretches from the Fredericksburg area to the Washington, D.C. suburbs.

McAuliffe and Virginia emergency response officials said they are working with hundreds of state and local employees statewide to minimize the number of weather-related issues. As of 6 a.m. Thursday, there were 71 disabled vehicle calls, 70 of which came from Northern Virginia.
