Unprecedented security measures have been put in place for the Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday, which is expected to see about 10,000 people in attendance.
Gunners have been given clear instructions to bring down any aerial object flying without permission.
The snipers of the National Security Guard will maintain a strict vigil within a 2 km radius of Rajpath to ensure the safety of the chief guest, French President Francois Hollande, who will be watching the parade with President Pranab Mukherjee and PM Narendra Modi. “Similarly, the Tamil Nadu presentation will depict the lifestyle, appearance, manners and customs of Toda tribe of Nilgiri district, one of the six primitive tribal groups of the state”, a senior official said.
Officials said anti-aircraft guns have been deployed at two vantage points to ward off any threat from the sky.
“Through this system, announcements can be made centrally from the police control room to be heard at all places simultaneously, or even selectively, if the situation warrants”, said an official. A specialised Wireless Integrated Public Address (WIPA) system has been set up at 31 crowded places and 13 metro stations.
