New Google VR hardware: What’s the story so far?

It will be interesting to see where Google positions its VR hardware. According to the folks at Road to VR, it seems that they have stumbled across several VR-related jobs at Google, which seems to suggest that Google building their own hardware is a possibility.

Another VR product may enter the fray. Now it appears that Google is working on hardware devices that do more than just act as bare-bones viewers for smartphones. The original listings mentioned virtual reality, but Google has since replaced it with “consumer hardware”.

Google’s Cardboard allows consumers to experience virtual reality by attaching the headset to any smartphone. The advert for a Hardware Engineering Technical Lead Manager details a position that will lead a team in developing consumer electronic devices while leading a system integration of highly-constrained, battery powered and high-performance VR hardware.

“Our consumer hardware team is working on revolutionizing how people interact with their hardware, and looking for engineers to make that a reality”, reads one listing for a “Hardware Engineering Technical Lead Manager”.

Those positions feature less specific information in the description, such as: “We want to open new ways to interact with devices and create a natural, seamless interface the world’s information”. However, it should be noted that a few job postings shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Google has a fleshed out business plan. You will be responsible for the building multiple CE devices and will put together the right team that will scale with our product offering.

To say that Virtual Reality is the new rage is an understatement.
