Syria’s official news agency SANA said the first attack in the residential area of al-Zahraa was a auto bomb assault and was followed by an attack by an individual wearing an explosive belt.

In a breaking news alert, state television said 100 people had also been injured in the blasts in the Al-Zahraa neighbourhood of the city, which has been targeted in bomb attacks multiple times before.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, put the toll at 26 dead, including 16 members of regime forces.

In the chaos of the first blast’s aftermath, and as a crowd gathered, the second bomber detonated his explosives, Barazi said.

Multiple bombings targeted a government-run security checkpoint in the central Syrian city of Homs on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people and wounding over a hundred amid intense political jockeying ahead of U.N.-backed peace talks scheduled to begin in Geneva Friday. Forces loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad have since managed to expel most opposition militants from the city.

The Cabinet condemned the two terrorist attacks, as Prime Minister Wael Halaqi said they aim at raising the terrorists’ morals especially after the victories achieved by the Syrian army over the terrorist organizations on different fronts.
