Pujols, Angels open doubleheader with 11-1 rout of Red Sox

The Yankees have been able to stay ahead in the American League East this season and they just took two of three games against the Mariners to come out of the All-Star break.

His cause was not helped one bit by the Red Sox offense, who only mustered one hit in the final four innings of the game.

-Brock Holt pinch hit for Xander Bogaerts in the top of the 7th and stayed in to play shortstop.

The problem for the Red Sox has been their starting pitching. Nava has been on the disabled list since May 26 because of a strained left thumb….

Prior to Trout, it was Wade Miley who was the game’s headliner.

The Angels got off to a relatively slow start considering the scorching hot start that Houston had.

But Huston Street”™s 300th career save was also there for the taking, and with a three-run lead and the Angels closer warming, Manager Mike Scioscia had a hard decision for the ninth: “Stick with Richards or give Street a shot at history. For a better team, that might be a blessing.

Hector Santiago (6-4, 2.33) is having his best season so far.

Angels: RHP Garrett Richards (9-6) will pitch on eight days’ rest in his rematch with Porcello. He’s been picking up some of the slack for struggling pitchers like Weaver and Shoemaker and that might have an effect on what the team may do at the trade deadline.

NOTES: Mike Trout started Game 2 of the doubleheader as the Angels’ designated hitter. I had to make the ball move because every guy in their lineup can hit a home run.

The Angels will send another lefty to the mound in Andrew Heaney (3-0, 1.32) in the nightcap.

The most excitement the Red Sox could create was a leadoff ground-rule double in the fifth.

“But Ryan Hanigan”™s soft liner caromed off Richards”™ back and right to second baseman Johnny Giavotella, who threw to first for the inning-ending out. Boston is 8-22 on the road against a left-handed starter, 1-4 in their last five games, and 1-4 in Wright’s last five starts.

Angels: Shake the rookie’s confidence. So the Angels got a helicopter, copying a trick used by several teams.

Both pitchers seemed to be really on their game. Boston is 3-8 in their last 11 games in Los Angeles.

Santiago hadn’t pitched for the Angels since July 10, and he didn’t appear in the All-Star Game. They’d score four more runs in the fourth inning, on another Aybar single and a three-run David Freese home run.
