The stars were up early Thursday morning to catch the Academy Award nominations.

LONDON, United Kingdom-US actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Friday claimed to feel no nerves at the prospect of claiming his first Oscar for his role in “The Revenant”, saying he had “done the work” and could do no more. Those include the top Golden Globe winners – Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” and Alejandro Inarritu’s “The Revenant” – along with “Spotlight”, “The Big Short” and “Room”.

DiCaprio, who has yet to win an Oscar, will compete with Bryan Cranston in Hollywood blacklist tale “Trumbo”, Matt Damon in space adventure “The Martian”, Michael Fassbender as technology visionary “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne as transgender artist Lili Elbe in “The Danish Girl”. She won it in 2013.

Still, Boone Isaacs says diversity is a big issue, but the performers who were nominated are deserving of that recognition.

The year’s overwhelmingly white list of nominees, including favourites Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson, has caused outrage on Twitter. Naturally, social media had a few words for the Academy for its consistent lack of diversity with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. He’s now one of just a handful of performers who have been nominated twice for the same role, and the distance between his movies is far and away the longest.

Financial crisis drama The Big Short and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are in the running for five awards. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for a best supporting actor award from “Creed”. Quentin Tarantino also failed to make the list for adapted screenplay and his “Hateful Eight” was omitted from the best picture and best director lists.

The nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards are in, and Oscar is smiling upon several films in unexpected ways. “Straight Outta Compton”, which is about the roots of black hip-hop group NWA, nominated only for its original screenplay.

 “Spotlight” earned six nominations, including Tom McCarthy for Best Director, and for two of its supporting actors, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams.

The other animated feature nominees are Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There. Comedian Chris Rock, who first hosted the program in 2005, returns as emcee for a second time.
