Shanahan had served as offensive co-ordinator for the 49ers the last time San Francisco won a Super Bowl in the 1994-95 season, but general manager Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York have instead plumped for former Philadelphia Eagles coach Kelly. The Eagles ended the season 7-9 but were 10-6 for two straight seasons before this year.

San Francisco endured a torrid campaign and finished 5-11, leading to head coach Jim Tomsula being fired after his first season in the role. “Trent Baalke’s going to handle the draft and Chip Kelly is going to coach the football team”, Kiper said on a conference call.

“As one of the most historic franchises in the National Football League, I realize the high standards and expectations that this position demands and I embrace the challenges ahead”, Kelly said in a statement.

The 49ers started their 2016-2017 season preparations by bringing in new coach Kelly, who was sacked from his coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles after another dismal season.

“And look, he has his shortcomings – I’ve mentioned them”, Garafolo continued.

Kelly was at the 49ers’ facility in Santa Clara on Thursday, as he began the process of putting together his coaching staff. Torrey Smith, the 49ers wide receiver, also welcomed his new coach.

To me, if Kelly can straighten things out with Kaepernick and get him back to the way he was, this team could catapult way back up the ranks and be a contender again“.

Tomsula signed a four-year, $14 million contract that will be paid in its entirety even though he was sacked January 3 after only one season, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Don Gates says “there goes the special place in my heart for the 49ers”, and CJ Bixler said “As a Seahawks fan I welcome this”.

They’re on the same team. I want that too and I’m fighting for that. Now, Kelly doesn’t have to worry about making a trade for Kaepernick. The quarterback underwent shoulder surgery in November and likely won’t fully recover from that until between March and May. The combination of Bradford and backup quarterback Mark Sanchez was not enough to produce a winning 2015 season, while questionable roster moves and personality differences were the nail in the coffin for Kelly.

Baalke interviewed Coughlin on Monday on the East Coast and Jackson on Sunday in Cincinnati.

The Giants, meanwhile, run a more conventional style of offense and were clearly not looking to hire a coach that was going to completely redo their offensive approach.
