Democratic mayor to challenge GOP’s Rand Paul in Senate race

Jim Gray wants to be more than Mayor of Lexington. “People don’t have the same opportunity we had growing up and instead of building things up like my family taught me, Washington is busy tearing each other down”.

“I feel like that there’s an environment in Washington that’s toxic, and people across the country, and including Kentucky, are looking for alternatives”, Gray told the Kentucky Herald-Leader.

Prior to be being elected mayor in 2011, Gray was Chairman and CEO of Gray Construction – a multi-national engineering, agriculture, and construction company. Rand Paul in the general election this fall.

If Gray were to become senator, however, Straub said Vice Mayor Steve Kay would then become mayor. Three other Democrats have filed, but Gray is viewed as the strongest candidate, with a record of creating jobs, attracting business, and raising the city’s minimum wage to $10.10.

Gray said that Kentuckians suffer from the “caustic nature” of partisan fighting in D.C., but he would “bring a voice of reason and a voice of moderation” to the Senate.

He also knocked Paul for his presidential run and hit him for cutting defense spending: “Senator Paul has put his own ambition ahead of Kentuckians and is behind policies that would hurt Kentucky families”.

“Whenever I have a problem in Lexington and we’re trying to solve it, I don’t blame one person or another person or a caucus”, said Gray.

Gray is ready to take his experience to Washington to deliver results for Kentucky.

While Alison Lundergan Grimes infamously refused to say if she voted for President Barack Obama in her 2014 Senate race, Gray said he did vote for Obama, “but that doesn’t mean that I agree with everything that he’s done”. But this time, it was for Paul’s presidential campaign.

The change may not be what voters think, but rather who’s voting, as ProPublica’s Alec MacGillis argued in a November op-ed for The New York Times.
