FreedomPop rakes in $50 mln

FreedomPop will sell a hotspot that can be used in the different regions for $49, while a SIM card to go in unlocked phones will cost $10. Global data roaming is obviously the main selling point of the SIM, which is why FreedomPop’s also offering a WiFi hotspot to stick it in for the introductory price of $50/£39.

“FreedomPop has proven that new Internet business models work in the telecom space and has developed the technology to scale it globally”, said COO and co-founder Steven Sesar. After this cash influx, the company’s total funding pool has crossed $109 million.

According to the company, it will be using the raised funding to fuel the growth of its disruptive free mobile service and hasten FreedomPop’s expansion internationally into markets in Asia, Europe and South America.

I’ve been an occasional FreedomPop user for a few years, and the company really does deliver on its promise of providing free data once you’ve paid for the hardware… but you might need to be vigilant to make sure you aren’t charged fees for services you didn’t know you were signing up for.

The company is offering hotspot services in over 25 countries for $50. A separate SIM card is also available at $10. It will initially give U.S. and U.K. users free global data in 25 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Czech Republic. By the end of this year, it also intends to expand the service into additional 40 countries, including Latin America, and Asia.

While far cheaper than the plans offered by the big carriers, or even some options aimed specifically at global road warriors, FreedomPop continues to rely on word of mouth to compete with companies that think nothing of dropping tens of millions of dollars on an advertising campaign.
