According to AppleInsider’s description of the patent, “To correct for diffraction and visual aberrations that propagate within miniature cameras, the proposed lens system includes three lenses, two of which are convex or substantially convex”. Kuo says Apple could use the LinX Imaging algorithm to bring a 2-3x optical zoom function to the iPhone 7 Plus while sidestepping the traditional bottlenecks associated with compact camera module (CCM) assembly.

According to a recent report, the iPhone 7 Plus will come with a dual lens camera, Apple will apparently be using technology they acquired in the purchase of LinX for the camera.
Kuo thinks that the high-end dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus will be in short supply early on, and that it will make up just 25 to 35 percent of the eventual iPhone 7 Plus shipments in 2016. KGI expects around 30% of iPhones to be equipped with the new feature, but it is unclear how Apple will make the model stand out. Time will tell if this is the year that we finally see a dual-camera system on an iPhone. The company is also expected to launch a smaller iPhone 6C or iPhone 5se with a 4 inch display at a press event in March, along with the new iPad Air 3.
The idea of dual cameras isn’t far fetched.
Kuo has a good track record when it comes to Apple predictions, but it’s still advisable to take everything with a grain of salt until formal confirmation.

In other words, Apple might be creating a premium version of the premium iPhone.
