In an interview with Women’s Weekly, director George Miller expressed his excitement after his movie received 10 nominations, this year’s second most nominated movie.
The best picture nominees, besides those two, are “Bridge of Spies”, “Spotlight”, “The Big Short”, “The Martian”, “Brooklyn” and “Room”.
Nick Hornby is nominated for best adapted screenplay for Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn, with fellow British author Alex Garland honoured for his original screenplay for Ex Machina. His competition is fairly stiff: others in the best actor category are Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”, Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne – an Oscar victor past year – for “The Danish Girl”.
The announcement of the all-white Oscar nominees set off a torrent of discussion on social media, with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite quickly gaining traction. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for a best supporting actor award from “Creed”.

After seemingly slipping in an unpredictable awards season, “Spotlight” showed particularly strength Thursday, landing six nominations including best director for McCarthy, best screenplay for McCarthy and Josh Singer and best supporting actor for Mark Ruffalo.
After all, this year will mark Leo’s sixth Oscar nomination (and fifth in the acting category), and fans are crossing their fingers that he’ll finally get to take home the gold after being overlooked for so long.
Hardy was more modest about his nomination.
The Oscar winners will be announced at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Chris Rock in Hollywood on February 28.
