However like we said, other companies like Google have crossed the 1 billion mark much earlier than Apple did, but considering that Apple makes its own hardware and software, it’s quite an accomplishment by the Cupertino company all the same. During the first quarter, 68% of product revenue was generated from sales of the iPhone. He said Apple has a large base of customers – with 1 billion Apple devices now in active use – who can be relied on to purchase new Apple gadgets, mobile apps and services like Apple Music.

Starting at 2 p.m. PDT, Apple will hold a financial results conference call for analysts. Over the past several years, Apple could be relied upon to post massive iPhone sales that passed the preceding year’s handily.

Apple posted $58 billion during the second quarter of 2015, meaning it expects its first year-over-year revenue decline in 13 years. On an adjusted basis, Apple said revenue was $80.8 billion. Its profit for the quarter was $18.4 billion, up by nearly $400 million year-over-year. Reports indicated that Apple had cut back on orders of its latest iPhones amid lower-than-expected sales.

However, there was iPhone sales growth of just 0.4%, the slowest rate in the history of the Apple smartphone, and a huge drop compared to the 46% growth in sales in the same quarter past year. Earnings amounted to $3.28 a share, which beat the $3.23 average forecast among analysts surveyed by FactSet. For the current quarter, Apple said that revenue may plunge 8.60 percent from the same quarter previous year. Apple predicted revenue would fall to between $50bn and $53bn during Q2, below the $58bn in the same quarter in 2015.

Demand has weakened for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, launched last September, as they have have fewer distinguishing features than their popular predecessors.

The company reported that it sold 74.8m iPhone devices during the quarter, up just 1pc on the 74.5m iPhones it sold a year ago. We can see, for instance, that iPhone sales were indeed the primary revenue driver, but it’s hard to determine the success of the Apple Watch and new Apple TV.
