Winter storms cause emergency need for blood

“Eligible donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help ensure blood products are available for patients”, said Communications Director, Nick Gehrig.

The Richland County chapter of the American Red Cross held an emergency blood drive Tuesday at the Richland Mall.

Amanda Eccles, Senior Marketing Coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “This is the time of year when we need our awesome donors in West Bridgford more than ever”.

In a serious plea for help, Red Cross hopes to collect as much blood as they can from willing and eligible donors as a new patient needs blood every two seconds.

It’s important we get donations from across the country’s diverse population, as some disorders are more common in certain ethnic backgrounds and patients need to receive well matched blood. “Blood donations are constantly needed”.

“When someone donates, we’re going to try to meet the immediate need in that area first”, she said. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body.

“Blood types O negative and O positive are at the lowest levels I’ve ever seen”, said donor recruitment manager Jennifer Shaw.

RaysUp is the Poulin Family’s way to thank all of the blood and platelet donors whose selfless donations saved his life. The Red Cross encourages individuals to make one of their New Year’s resolutions to become a regular donor.
