A virus believed to be responsible for a string of recent birth defects in Brazil has made another appearance in Canada.

Zika is mosquito-borne and historically found in Southeast Asia and Africa. Though Americans have contracted the virus, it has yet to be transmitted in the United States.

Flathead County health officials say that earlier reports of state health officials investigating a possible case of the Zika virus are misleading. The country’s government announced that two people had been infected with the virus in the country’s capital, Managua.

Jamaica, Colombia, and Ecuador have also recommended that their citizens delay pregnancy.

The World Health Organisation has predicted the virus will spread to most countries across the Americas, including the US.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian cruise lines are allowing pregnant women to reschedule their journeys if they had booked a cruise to a destination where a Zika virus health warning is in effect.

Complications from Zika. Cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome has been reported in patients following suspected Zika infection. The Brazilian government has sent soldiers “door to door” to destroy places where mosquitoes could breed. The U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic have also been added to the travel advisory list.

For example, the CDC’s travel notices are especially geared toward pregnant women, because of concerns about the virus’ connection to brain abnormalities in babies and other neurological conditions.

The Zika virus has been known since the 1950s, but is getting more attention after infected mosquitos are popping up in African countries, and in Central America and South America.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention advised pregnant women to postpone travel to 14 Latin American countries because of the virus.

The Zika virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, but most people who are infected show no symptoms.
