Ex-prosecutor to lead investigation into Flint water
Brooks says Snyder’s regret for what has happened appears “genuine”.

Snyder and staff did not speak to reporters.
Mayor Weaver spoke during a scheduled press conference Wednesday morning, and was joined by a number of officials, including Governor Snyder.
Brooks planned to present a list of 15 priorities drawn up by the organization during the meeting Tuesday evening.
The plan includes a call to repeal Michigan’s emergency manager law, which Brooks and others see as a contributor to the health emergency in Flint.
National attention has been focused on Flint, Michigan, where residents continue to deal with the effects of a months-long problem with high lead levels in its water – a problem residents say is partially the fault of government mishandling.
Snyder declared a state of emergency in Flint on January 5 and then activated the Michigan National Guard, which has been assisting with water distribution efforts. The hospital is where more than 2,000 children have been tested for lead since the water switch was made in 2014.
The state asked the feds to expand Medicaid to anyone under 21 who was exposed to lead to pay for health care monitoring and services they will need for years to come.
He announced that the state would have an increased administrative presence in Flint and called it the beginning of a long-term effort. But that system wasn’t ready yet, so in the interim, Flint chose to reopen an old water plant which relied on the polluted Flint River.
Children were hospitalized over high lead content in their blood.
But the big, bad Republican governor did not cause the problems with Flint’s water supply – small-town Democrats and inept Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials did.
The EPA will be collecting drinking water samples to get a better understanding of which plumbing materials are of greatest concern for lead-leaching and to ensure that corrosion control is being restored to Flint’s water system.
The rapper did that right after he announced that he donated $1 million worth of bottled water to the people of Flint, Mich., since their water supply has been contaminated with lead. The suit seeks an order requiring city and state officials to remedy alleged violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Education is arguably the most important tool in escaping poverty, but lead poisoning severely inhibits learning and can permanently mentally disable children.
The state’s environment department approved the switch even though the city’s treatment plant was not able to produce water that met state and federal standards.
The state investigation aims to determine “whether any MI laws were violated in the process that created a major public health crisis for Flint residents”.
Schuette said the two would play key roles in the investigation and prevent conflicts of interest since the attorney general’s office also defends the state.

Snyder, a former accountant and venture capitalist whose Twitter handle is onetoughnerd, took office in 2011 promising to fix the state’s many financial problems by applying the expertise of outsiders who could reinvent the way government works. The news led several 2016 presidential candidates to comment on the crisis, resulted in hefty donations from celebrities, and produced protests calling for the resignation of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.
