Pakistan expresses concern over use of Afghan soil in attack on BKU

Balochistan government has chose to establish a special force to be deployed at university campuses across the province in the aftermath of the brutal attack on the Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda town last week. The students and teachers of different disciplines are attending classes as educational activities formally resumed in the university amid tight security arrangements.

Pakistan’s Bacha Khan University briefly reopened its doors on Monday, days after more than 20 people were killed in an attack by suspected Taliban militants. Once inside Pakistan, the attackers received 10 phone calls from individuals in Afghanistan. Bajwa said the attack was masterminded by Umar Mansoor, a Pakistani Taleban militant based in Afghanistan who is also held responsible for the December 2014 massacre of 134 children in the city of Peshawar the deadliest militant attack in Pakistan’s history.

He said some teachers had demanded licensed weapons for self-defence, a suggestion that is rejected by other teaching members and has reignited a debate about arming school staff.

Last Wednesday’s attack in Charsadda saw heavily-armed militants storm the campus, gunning down students and teachers in a bloody rampage before they were killed by the military.

However, Pakistan officials said the university attack was orchestrated from Afghanistan and that they have arrested five Pakistani facilitators.

The Afghan Charge d Affaires, Syed Abdul Nasir Yousafiwas called to the Foreign Office on Monday to convey the concerns, a foreign office statement issued here Tuesday said.

The handlers of the terrorists used the Afghan territory and telecommunication service for the attack.

There was no immediate response from Kabul officials.

Security in and around all university campuses in Balochistan had already been tightened after last week’s attack in Charsadda to avert any untoward incident.
