Obama promises party faithful: ‘Democrats will win’

Vice President Joe Biden said he was confident the Democrats will win the Senate and also the House, NBC News reported.

Obama said at his State of the Union address this month that he wants to give Biden that opportunity and put him in charge of “mission control”. President Barack Obama is creating a new federal task force to accelerate cancer research.

The President only spoke for about 15 minutes before the friendly crowd of House Democrats, and occasionally deviated from defending his record to throwing subtle jabs at the Republican Party.

The task force will include representatives from at least 13 federal bodies, including the Food and Drug Administration and National Cancer Institute, according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity because Obama hadn’t signed the memorandum yet.

It’s a phrase Biden uttered again last fall when he stared appearing again in public after his son, Beau, 46, died of cancer last May.

“We don’t do it almost enough”, he said of making the contrast. “The best way to win is to run on what we’ve done and what we stand for, and run on what more we are trying to do, make it clear what we think we have to do to finish the agenda”, Biden told Democrats gathered here in the city’s Inner Harbor to plot their 2016 strategy. The memo says the goal is to double the rate of progress on treatment and prevention. A key focus for the task force will be identifying bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles that make the government a bottleneck in the research process.

But Biden warned Democrats that many voters aren’t aware of what they have done over the last seven years or what the GOP wants to do.

In a not-so-veiled shot at GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, Obama said the US won’t strengthen itself “by allowing politicians to insult Muslims or pit groups of Americans against each other”. “We’re trying to get to a quantum leap on the path to a cure”, Biden said Thursday in a blog post.

Biden said he planned to chair the task force’s first meeting on Monday. “But I do have something to offer when it comes to being a catalyst and bringing folks together”, Biden wrote.
