A portion of Highway 101 in Southern Oregon is completely shut down after a massive sinkhole opened up, swallowing any semblance of land that was once there and causing minor delays.

A detour along U.S. Highway 101 went into effect at 9pm on Thursday night and drivers were advised to use caution and reduce speeds along the detour. The sinkhole is at milepost 358 of Highway 101.

There are two sinkholes in the area that are in the slow but steady process of merging into one big, 50-70 foot deep sinkhole.

It is the second sinkhole in the location that workers from the Oregon Department of Transportation were working on. The detour will be in place at least a week, transportation spokesman Jared Castle told the newspaper. Kyle Rice, a Brookings High School graduate, posted a YouTube video of drone footage that was shared with the department.

Castle could not provide an estimate for the size of the new sinkhole, but said it is the largest southwest OR has seen since 1996.
