They also threatened to suspend work for an “indefinite” period if their demands are not met. “It has been two-three months that the workers have not received their salaries. No government in the past had put a moratorium on the money which the three MCDs owed to them”, AAP said. Demanding regular salaries, payment of long pending arrears, regularisation of contract based workers, health cards and unification of three municipal corporations, the workers launched the strike on January 27. It was hearing a petition seeking the release of salaries of municipal workers. “We will continue to dump garbage on roads till they (government) feel ashamed”, a protester said.

According to reports, the protesting workers are likely to gherao the residence of Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai on Thursday.

“The strike is supported by 27 employees unions representing not only sanitation workers but also other class IV and III employees as well as nurses and teachers who are participating in it”, Gehlot claimed.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath also directed the Delhi Police to ensure that sanitation workers do not face any difficulty in their job.

“Entire amount of Rs 892.92 crore i.e. 100% of the revised estimates of the year 2015-16 for North Delhi Municipal Corporation under non plan has been released by the Delhi government”. Even as the BJP-ruled corporations blame the Aam Aadmi Party government for failing to pay salaries and the latter shrugs off any responsibility, doctors and nurses and engineers of both civic bodies will join the strike from Saturday.
