Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson says Couch was taken to the detention center in Fort Worth on Thursday after arriving on a flight at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The sheriff revealed Couch is scheduled to attend a detention hearing on Friday (29 January) and was also set to be medically screened and assigned to a housing unit at Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center. His defense lawyers claimed an affluent lifestyle clouded Couch’s judgement-and he didn’t know right from wrong. Couch pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 10 years’ probation, ordered to get therapy, and sent to rehab for a combination of substance abuse and behavior problems – to be paid for by his parents.
The two fugitives were apprehended later that month in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta after he used his cell phone to order Domino’s pizza.
When asked by CNN whether Couch was taken against his will to Mexico, Brown replied, “I don’t think that’s what I said”.
HANDOUT/REUTERS A still is shown from footage that Mexico’s National Institute of Migration released of Couch at the airport in Mexico City on Thursday morning. The judge will decide whether he’ll stay there or be held at the Tarrant County jail.
Reagan Wynn released the following statement to News 8 Thursday afternoon, stating that they are “optimistic” Couch will be compliant with adult court.
“Affluenza” is not recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as an official diagnosis. Couch was sentenced in juvenile court to 10 years of probation for the 2013 wreck that killed four people and injured several others. The pair are accused of fleeing the country after Texas prosecutors launched an investigation into whether he violated the conditions of his probation after he was seen in a video at a party with alcohol.
Tonya Couch, Ethan’s mother, is on trial on accusations of helping her son flee.
Ethan Couch was convicted of killing four people while driving drunk in 2013.
Thursday, his attorneys said Ethan Couch will cooperate with authorities and “successfully complete his term of probation”.
Couch, 18, made a decision to drop his deportation appeal after going to Mexico with his mother back in December.
Couch’s mother, Tonya Couch, is charged in Texas with hindering the apprehension of a felon.
