Free tax filing assistance available

The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program will offer tax preparation services to low- and moderate-income taxpayers from three area sites beginning February 1. The certified volunteers work as a team with each return reviewed for quality control.

Santa Barbara High School is the first high school in the country to get the electronic identification number to prepare and transmit federal and state taxes to the IRS. All discussions are confidential. The site is available through the Northwestern Regional Library website (www.nwrl.org) free of charge. Through the program, taxpayers complete their own tax return online for free.

Information about special tax credits, the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credits for the Elderly and Disabled will be made available, too.

VITA is funded by the United Way of Logan County and is created to help low income families who could use a boost to maximize their tax benefits.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance set up shop in the basement of the downtown Human Resources Development Council building Wednesday and will be there every week until April 15.

They were able to keep more than $2.4 million in tax returns in our community.

In recognition of EITC Awareness Day on January 29, 2016, eligible residents are encouraged to file their taxes free and claim all their returns. The economic impact of the VITA program was such a success, that this year MCUW has added another mobile site in Splendora.
