US to collect equal pay data from all big employers

The EEOC data collection plan is still in the proposal stage, and needs to go through a number of administrative hurdles. Recent analysis conducted by the National Partnership for Women & Families found that the 77 cents to the dollar figure is a median for all women collectively.

The law was the latest federal effort to address what’s known as the wage gap between working men and women.

Ms Ledbetter – a former Alabama tyre plant supervisor who lost a landmark 2007 equal pay case in the US Supreme Court – joined Mr Obama for Friday’s announcement.

On the heels of a GOP debate in which the issue of equal pay was once again overlooked, President Obama reminded Americans that his work in the United States is not yet done. Only then can we erode the pay gap once and for all.

The rules will require companies to report to the federal government what they pay employees, broken down by the employees’ race, gender, and ethnicity, according to the New York Times.

Employers would submit the data as part of the September 30, 2017, EEO-1 deadline.

Obama said this continues to be a problem.

“While we strongly support nondiscrimination in compensation, the type of reporting proposed by the administration today would place unnecessary and onerous burdens on employers while providing no meaningful insight as to whether employer pay practices are discriminatory”, he said.

“We can’t deliver on the promise of equal pay unless we have the best, most comprehensive information about what people earn”, Labor Secretary Thomas Perez said in a statement on Friday. Perhaps a few sexist employers truly will be rooted out as a result, but many more businesses-and millions of employees-will pay a high price in terms of lost flexibility and freedom.

EEOC Chair Jenny Yang said the commission will use the information to analyze pay disparities across industries and, once the EEOC publishes its aggregate data, it could help employers take a critical look at their own pay structures. But, if they don’t, the data would give his department a “more powerful tool…to root out discrimination where it does exist”. The federal law marked significant progress in closing the wage gap, but there is more work to do, the senators said. “That’s not how were going to build a great future for our country”.
