Beck quickly went on the attack during a 45-minute speech at the Cruz event in Ankeny.

Donald Trump thinks his supporters are so devoted that he could “shoot somebody” on Fifth Avenue without losing any voters. Ted Cruz, who is in a tight race for the country’s leadoff nominating contest here in nine days.

Additionally, a majority of his supporters have declared their minds are made up, compared to other voters: Fifty-two percent say they have decided on Trump versus 24 percent of non-Trump supporters who have made up their mind.

“The time for silliness and reality show tactics has passed”, he said, and warned a Trump victory in the February 1 caucuses could have lasting consequences.

However, the establishment’s growing acceptance of Trump’s electoral prospects so far hasn’t manifested itself in tangible support for his campaign.

Beck and Cruz did a mock oath of office on stage, and the commentator handed the Texas Republican a compass he claims belonged to George Washington, allowing the senator to borrow it during the election. Among them were Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (his ownership of the Washington Post is “a tax scam”, Trump said), Secretary of State John F. Kerry (“not street-wise”) and GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush (not just “low energy”, but also “a sad case”).

“The man owes America an apology, and he should ask conservatives in America for forgiveness”, Beck said. In response, Trump has called for fewer gun restrictions and a harder stance on terrorism. But would they support him if he shot someone?

Last month, he appeared to consider whether he would kill journalists, as Russian President Vladimir Putin – whom Trump defended – has been accused of doing.

“My gut feeling is that people are angry and the people on the right, they just want to win and they’re exhausted of losing, and that’s a very unsafe place to be”, Beck said. Many of these first-time attendees, 43 percent, are supporting Trump, while 19 percent favor Cruz and 14 percent Rubio.
