Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2015.

“Our condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the community member who recently died from complications of West Nile Virus”, said Nevada County Health Officer Dr. Ken Cutler. The trapped mosquitoes are shipped to a laboratory in Quebec where they are tested for West Nile Virus. WNV season typically goes from summer through the fall and occurs each year in the United States.
“All Mississippians are potentially at risk – not just the areas where cases are reported”, the MSDH said on its website. About 1 out of 5 of those infected will develop fever along with symptoms such as headache, body aches, and occasionally vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. When transmitted to people, it can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.
Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET while you are outdoors. It is advisable to get rid of any standing water around your home (e.g., in flower pots, rainwater barrels, children’s toys, wading pools).

The district authorized an adult mosquito control application Saturday in the area where the positive samples were collected to reduce the number of mosquitoes and break the virus transmission cycle, district officials said.
