Donald Trump mocked by rivals as he boycotts Republican TV debate

Two candidates who were not sleeping – but who were also relegated to the curious “kiddie table” debate that the networks have used this election season – showed up at Trump’s rally.

Texas senator Ted Cruz, locked in a tight contest with Mr Trump in Iowa, opened the debate with a sarcastic impression of the property mogul’s frequent insults of his opponents.

“I’m a maniac, and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly”, Cruz replied.

Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier hit back at Trump in a statement Friday, knocking the NY billionaire’s past support for legal abortion and praiseworthy comments about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “And hey, Howie, I think I did a smart thing”, Trump told Boston radio host Howie Carr, laughing.

Fox News will still certainly argue that the debate was a big deal for the network as it was the second highest-rated telecast in the network’s 20-year history. Heck, downright likeable by another candidate who usually doesn’t get many Mr. Congeniality votes. St. Edward’s University political science professor Brian Smith said missing the debate hasn’t done any harm for Trump.
