Within a week, the Snyder administration reversed course and confirmed findings that Flint’s water was creating a health threat in old homes with lead pipes or pipes fused with lead solder and corroborated elevated levels of lead in blood in two local ZIP codes.

President Barack Obama has said it was “inexplicable and inexcusable” that Flint’s residents were drinking contaminated water. The water was tested by officials before it got to a filter, and Lurie stressed that the results do not mean officials think there’s a problem with the filters. Residents were told not to drink the water and a public health emergency was declared by the Genesee County Health Department in October, and Flint’s mayor declared a state of emergency in December.

The agency that manages state buildings says coolers were introduced at the building after Flint flunked some drinking water standards.

“We take water for granted, and we use water so much”.

In the midst of a roiling public health crisis over toxic water, Michael Moore, the academy award-winning documentarian and native Flint, Michigan resident, called on public support to hold state officials there accountable, and provide a respite for struggling Flint residents. He said he didn’t know if workers promoted that it was available.

He plans to drive one of the trucks himself, delivering the water while proudly wearing his Cubs hat – and while proudly showing off the generosity of his city.

Buhs said the purchase of purified water was prompted by a city warning around January 1 of 2015 that total trihalomethanes (TTHMs), a by-product of the chlorine disinfectants added to the water to kill the bacteria, had exceeded federal limits in 2014. That includes the 18-month period during which the city switched its water source while under state financial management until it reconnected to Detroit’s system because of lead contamination blamed on state regulatory failures.

The coalition alleges that the government violated the Safe Drinking Water Act.

“Basically it started off as Facebook post just trying to get everyone involved and just helping out the community of Flint; that’s what it’s all about”, said Jermaine Murray, project chair of “Clean Water for Flint” put on by the National Pan Hellenic Council.
