CBS’ Scott Pelley Remembers Challenger: ‘Astronauts Are Heroes for a Reason’
The rest of the Challenger crew, remembered fondly by Morgan: Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka and Gregory Jarvis. Mr. Reagan’s epic speeches are too numerous to keep count of, but one of the most widely praised is the 40th president’s address to the American people following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

Following the ceremony, members of the public were invited to visit the plaques and to leave their own messages or private mementos; in short order, Christa McAuliffe’s memorial was piled high with letters, notes and drawings from school children, with an honorary apple also being left for the first member of the Teachers in Space program. “Our thoughts and memories of Christa will always be fresh and comforting”.
Clifford kept a postcard from McAuliffe, on which she said they were getting a group together to plan lessons onboard the shuttle, and she asked Clifford for input.

He now heads the Hilo-based Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems.
At Kennedy, the Scobee contingent will number 12, including June’s son Richard, a major general in the Air Force, and a 16-year-old granddaughter. Both his children are now in their 50s.
