‘Spotlight’ wins best ensemble at Screen Actors Guild Awards
Idris Elba -who was overlooked by AMPAS for his turn as a savage warlord in Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation, won best supporting actor for that feature as well as male actor in TV movie-miniseries for Luther. In the weeks since then, the nominations have spawned cries for an Oscar boycott and precipitated membership changes for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

In the best actress category, Brie Larson, also an Oscar favourite, won for Room, in which she plays a kidnapped woman living in captivity with her young son.
DiCaprio, 41, claimed his first SAG Award in nine nominations for his role as a frontiersman who is left to die in “The Revenant”.
Balloting was open during the #OscarsSoWhite backlash and closed on Friday.
Queen Latifah won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a TV movie or mini-series for Bessie.
It comes amid controversy over a lack of diversity among Oscar nominees.
The newspaper drama “Spotlight”, badly in need of some Oscar momentum, took the top honor at the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The actors guild cast a clear vote for diversity, and the beneficiaries included Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba, Viola Davis and Idris Elba, who won two awards.
Clutching her actor award, Larson revealed the best piece of advice she had ever been given.
“Orange is the New Black” dominated the comedy series trophies at the SAG Awards, winning the ensemble cast and the female actor award for Uzo Aduba.
“Look at this stage”, cast member Laura Prepon said while accepting the award. Diversity is universal and it’s more than we’re focusing on. This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity: “different race, color, creed, sexual orientation”, Prepon said. “They won because the actors have craft, they have a level of excellence that reaches people – and we’re actors too”.
Alicia Vikander, a 27-year-old Swedish actress, was named best supporting actress for her work in “The Danish Girl“.
“The lesson I learned was know your lines, get that over with, they you can settle into all the other moments in a scene”.
The SAG Awards are often punctuated by tributes to the acting profession.
But the SAG awards celebrated and honoured black actors. Williams noted its roster of presenters and nominees as proof of that.
Over just a few hours Saturday night, the SAG Awards and Sundance showered their honors on a parade of performers and films that presented a stark contrast to the crisis that has plagued the Oscars.
He was hugged by his Titanic co-star Kate Winslet on his way up to the stage, where he said: “I am truly humbled by this because it comes form my fellow actors”. “That’s about it. I feel very positive about this day”. “Carol is better than all of us; we’re going to give her a prize”, said Poehler. He received a standing ovation as he accepted his award. The comedian-actress noted that when she wanted to do a variety show the network told her, “Comedy-variety is a man’s game”. Her stellar career served as a lengthy, emphatic rebuttal to that remark.
