West Nile infected mosquitoes found in Bloomfield

This is the first direct evidence of West Nile activity the Hastings and Prince Edward health unit has found in the two counties this summer. The reported case is an adult in Hinds County.

“While (West Nile virus) can occur any time of the year, we see the bulk of our cases during peak season, which is July through September”, MSDH State Epidemiologist Thomas Dobbs said.

In the past, West Nile virus cases had been confirmed from several parts of Mississippi. In 2014, Mississippi had 43 WNV cases and seven deaths. “So this is the time of year to be extremely vigilant when going outdoors”. When transmitted to people, it can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. About 1 out of 5 of those infected will develop fever along with symptoms such as headache, body aches, and occasionally vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

No human or animal cases of West Nile or eastern equine encephalitis have been detected so far this year and there is no elevated risk level. It is advisable to get rid of any standing water around your home (e.g., in flower pots, rainwater barrels, children’s toys, wading pools).

County officials said Monday the infected mosquitoes were found in residential areas of Silver Spring and Dickinson townships.
