“I visited the free clinic and that doesn’t work because again I say you get what you pay for so without insurance you may not get the proper medication, you may not be able to afford a specialist and you may not be able to get the test you need”, said Davis. Through a 1332 federal waiver, our legislators have a key opportunity to create a process to remove the exclusion of undocumented communities from Covered CA and pave the way for a more prosperous California. The state-run health exchange, which launched in October 2013, offers sliding-scale subsidies for private coverage to people with no access to health care on the job and directs low-income people to Medi-Cal, the state’s health program for the poor.

The fine is calculated two different ways, and uninsured consumers will pay whichever amount is higher. “If you’ve got someone who’s got really expensive care going to the hospital on a regular basis, you’re going to hit your maximum out of pocket, which is like $6,000 and then you’re going to be covered 100 percent”. Enrollment for Medi-Cal is year-round. Lots of help is available.
