‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ tops the North American box office
Oscar contender The Revenant continues to do well with Leonardo DiCaprio’s wilderness epic pulling in $12.4 million – good enough for second place. The film has grossed over 138.1 million dollars after 24 days of wide release.

New Zealand’s box office results will be available on Tuesday – but are expected to follow similar trends with The Revenant and Star Wars still holding top spots. The film was buoyed by critical acclaim (an 80% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com) and audience raves (a solid A on CinemaScore).
This user says: “They were out to earn Chinese money, but I’ll never watch this again because the movie has changed from a kung fu film to a fantasy one”. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was third with $10.8 million and looks to pass $900 million domestically this week.
Its first day total already compares favorably against the 116.6 million yuan earned by Universal/Illumination’s Minions last September at a launch which included midnight screenings.
Placing fourth was the new rescue thriller, The Finest Hours, with $10-million. “The Force Awakens” added $10.9 million at the box office, and is now sitting at $895.4 million in domestic box office revenue.
Starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, it is based on the true story of a 1952 rescue of a ship that breaks apart during a raging New England nor’easter.
The film was met with mixed notices from the press but decent feedback from ticket buyers polled on CinemaScore. And Ride Along 2 rounded out the top five with $8.3 million. Off 33%, the sequel has earned $71 million so far and should wind down its run near the $85 million mark. Instead, it seduced a limp $6.2 million worth of business from 2,075 screens.
Meanwhile, this poster believes “it doesn’t matter whether the film is produced by China”.
Then there’s Jane Got a Gun.
Hollywood had a bumpy weekend.

The Weinstein Co.’s “Jane Got a Gun“, starring Natalie Portman, brought in $803,000 in a less robust 1,210-theater opening.
