But the snowy Park City-based festival, which Redford founded in 1985 and has launched recent awards-nominated films including Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station, Boyhood and Brooklyn, stops short of advocacy. And for those who live or work in Park City, it’s the start of a 10-day marathon. “That’s what it feels like”.

Norman Lear offered a bleak assessment of the USA presidential campaign at the Sundance Film Festival opening night premiere of a documentary on his life and career in both Hollywood and political activism. And this year, there are also a few films about political figures.

“We show the films that are on the filmmakers’ minds, especially in the documentary realm”, said Cooper.

“Now there’s a lot that’s permeating our whole reality”.

Last year, “it was women and young people”. But, you know, movies like this just scream for a rowdy audience.

Since 2004’s drug-mule drama Maria Full of Grace, which garnered a Best Actress nomination for Catalina Sandino Moreno, writer-director Joshua Marston has mostly worked in television, releasing the Albanian-set drama The Forgiveness of Blood in 2011. We have a seat at that table in terms of providing a constructive voice [and we want to] try and facilitate that handoff.

Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford said he’s excited about this year’s line up.

Slamdance, billed as “a showcase for raw and innovative filmmaking self-governed by filmmakers, for filmmakers”, takes place Friday through January 28. Participants will discuss what goes into creating a successful film score, the ingredients of an effective composer/director relationship, the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL experience and more.

“It just kept coming and kept coming and it’s fascinating”, he said. According to Sundance.org, festival organizers “encourage audiences concerned about film content to consider films selected for the Student Screening Program”.

“Kodak understands the importance of keeping film available and affordable for independent storytellers to preserve their work regardless of the original capture format”, said Anne Hubbell, Director of Motion Picture Film, Kodak. It was different. It was offbeat. “It was really interesting to see that filmmakers finding fresh ways of getting into ideas and stories that have been told countless times, but they’re still finding fresh perspectives and angles to tell them”.

Rebecca Daly is one of the female directors and Irish filmmakers to watch out for at Sundance as she returns to the director’s chair with her latest film Mammal; she has also penned the film’s screenplay.

At the same time, Pohlman said, “Pulling into Main Street, the Kimball Art Center is now Samsung”.

“Morris From America.” A deft coming-of-age tale with a twist: 13-year-old baby rapper Morris, along with his father, are “the only brothers in Heidelberg”, a staid German city. Their films will soon launch onto the global stage, beginning their journeys through our culture.

Sykes likes that Sundance resists the tendency of big studios to rely on “tentpole blockbusters” that seem to spawn “sequels and sequels”, he said.

It has an impeccable record in promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity, but it does so by way of telling great stories, not by pointing fingers, said Redford, who was dressed as per the Sundance norm of casual sweater, blue jeans and cowboy boots. In his new film, “How To Let Go of the World (and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change)”, Fox ruminates on climate change, which he says is the greatest threat our world has ever known. “The game is always changing”.
