The Suns will interview assistant coaches today before choosing an interim head coach.
The interim coach is expected to be one of two assistants, either Corey Gaines or Earl Watson. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the firing had not been announced. In five years as head coach in Phoenix, D’Antoni’s teams went 253-136 and made four trips to the National Basketball Association postseason.
The Suns have lost 19 of their past 21 games, during which time they have been missing several key players.
That left youngsters Archie Goodwin, Devin Booker and T.J. Warren in starting roles.
General manager Ryan McDonough on Tuesday is to discuss developments and has said he expects the team to be active leading to the NBA’s February 18 trade deadline.
The 64-year-old got back in the league in December when the 76ers hired him as their offensive coordinator under head coach Brett Brown. Hornacek was runner-up to Gregg Popovich for National Basketball Association coach of the year.
