Iowa’s secretary of state rips Cruz over campaign mailer

‘Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses’.

Cruz’s campaign quickly confirmed the origins of the mailer, even as Cruz endorser and radio host Steve Deace pronounced it fake.

Presidential candidates vying for their party nominations are toning down their attacks against rivals opting instead for messages of reflection on the morning of the country’s leadoff Iowa caucuses.

Pate continued, “Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never “grades” voters”.

Ted Cruz said he will “apologize to nobody” for a campaign mailer he sent out to Iowa voters that was made to look like an official government document.

The bottom of the mailer says registration and voter history are public records “distributed by the Iowa Secretary of State and/or county election clerks”.

The mailers list a voting score for the recipients and some neighbors – calling the scores “public record” – and urge Iowans to caucus Monday to improve their scores.

The face-off is unique to Iowa, one of the only states to conduct its primary as a caucus, where voters listen to speeches and then publicly show their support for candidates. “I just felt like it’s such a weird way to get voters to caucus for them”, he said.

‘It sounds like he’s under a lot of pressure and maybe not reacting very well to it. Which is I problematic because presidents are under pressure every day’.

“Hear about Ted Cruz’s shady mail piece?” In a series of tweets, he asked that reporters make it clear he had nothing to do with the Cruz literature.

Cruz said before a Saturday town hall in Sioux City, Iowa, that he remained hopeful front-runner Donald Trump would accept his invitation for a one-on-one debate. “Matt Schultz is a former secretary of state, he’s the chairman of our campaign, [he] put out a statement saying these mailers are routine”, Cruz said.

“These mailers are common practice to increase voter turnout”, he said, according to the New York Times.

The Texas Republican’s campaign is banking on a painstaking turnout strategy here in Iowa, confident that its organization and analytics will carry it across the finish line Monday night.
