Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel Touts Deal for Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue

The cover, which is shot by Annie Leibovitz each year, features 13 women, all in black and ranging in age and ethnicity.

With the ongoing outcry of #OscarsSoWhite and criticisms over it’s lack of diversity now plaguing the industry, the cover is a powerful statement of inclusiveness.

Vanity Fair got it right diversity-wise – being the big topic of the moment – but the Conde Nast glossy also did a very non-ageist and highly feminist thing on the cover of their 2016 Hollywood Issue.

The shoot marks a positive shift for Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood issue.

Among those featuring are Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita N’yongo, Brie Larson, Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton, Viola Davis and Alicia Vikander.

Renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz took the photos.

The mag’s fashion and style director Jessica Diehl discussed the all-black palette of the cover, saying, “The dresses on the cover are all black because that lets each actress’s face stand out-faces that are expressive, and in many cases even transformative”.

This year’s cover is far more diverse than last year’s issue, which only featured two actors of colour: David Oyelowo and Oscar Isaac.

With 35 Oscar nominations tallied between them, this year’s women are clearly an award-winning choice.
