PDP, BJP to meet J&K governor over government formation

With the Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra asking the ruling alliance partners – People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – to decide on government formation, both sides have been engaged in prolonged internal parleys to finalise their formal stand.

Among many other political and developmental components, the “Agenda of the Alliance’, chalked out between the two parties last March, talks about starting a dialogue with the Hurriyat, protecting the special status of the state and wresting back the control of two key power projects from the NHPC”. “Party leaders including the state president, Sat Sharma, MP, Jugal Kishore Sharma, and former Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh will meet the Governor tomorrow at 6 pm”. Party leaders said the matter was not even discussed. Mr Sharma said a BJP delegation will also call on Mr Vohra Tuesday and “explain our position in the backdrop of the meeting we had in Jammu today and our consultations with the party high command in Delhi”.

Mehbooba said PDP will take a call on government formation as and when it is confident that Sayeed’s vision and mission will be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit.

The PDP leader said, for the first time since Sayeed passed away on January 7 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, that her father died a sad man.

National Conference today hit out at PDP and BJP over the political uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir and said fresh elections should be held if the two partners are unable to form the government. After polls in 2014, the PDP (28 seats)-BJP (25) had a comfortable majority in the 87-member assembly.

There is a strong line of thinking in the PDP rank and file that its alliance with the BJP has only proved detrimental to its (PDP’s) interests and halted its growth, particularly in Kashmir Valley. Sources told IANS that BJP has decided not to bow before any pressure from PDP.

The PDP continues to be sustaining the Plan of Coalition is just a and wishes its execution on-ground in nature and notice to guarantee the State’s comprehensive growth. Mr. Akhtar stated, “We’ve not requested for something fresh”. Mehbooba will be meeting the Governor in the afternoon tomorrow. There was no discussion on electing the Legislative Party leader, a pre-requisite for Government formation.
