It might seem odd that Gmail which is older than any of the other services mentioned above, other than search took so long to hit that milestone, but it makes sense.

Gmail now accounts for a billion active monthly users and becomes the seventh product from Google to have achieved this milestone.

“We’re excited about the opportunities we have across Google and Other Bets to use technology to improve the lives of billions of people”, Porat added.

There are also 3.2 billion people with an internet connection across the globe, according to the ITU, which is only set to increase as the proliferation of mobile internet continues, while the global population stands at 7.4 billion people.

During the official statement, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai also noted that the growth of users has been fueled by mobile users.

Gmail’s growth has been on an upward swing steadily and in May 2015, the company revealed that it had already touched the 900 million active users mark.

Google shared the landmark achievement and expressed its gratitude toward users through Twitter.

The data shows it is normal, since Android has more than one billion users and users have been spending more and more time on their smartphones. AI is increasingly being used in the search giant’s services, including Gmail. Messenger is also getting close to the 1 billion user milestone as well, Facebook said in last week’s earnings call. Hotmail, on the other hand, has around 400 million users, while Yahoo is far behind with less than 300 million users, showcasing the true popularity of Gmail compared to other email services these days.

To talk about Gmail’s competitors, Outlook had more than 420 million users as of 2013. Yet, she finds any tech-related topic or scientific topic is a challenge worth meeting.
