A winter storm watch is in effect for parts of southeastern Minnesota as well – that area is expected to see heavy snow, but not as much wind.

The State Patrol said Highway 14 in southern Minnesota was also shut down.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says Interstate 90 west of Albert Lea closed at 2 p.m. Tuesday because of hazardous driving conditions.

Many students have the day off in Minnesota as a powerful storm moves through the state. Many roads in southwestern and south central Minnesota, including a stretch of I-90, are either closed or impassable due to whiteout conditions. St. Paul is dismissing high school students at 1:30 and canceling after-school activities.

Farther north, from St. Cloud to Hinckley, about 3 to 6 inches are expected.

KSTP Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl says the winds will start to cause some severe blowing and drifting snow later Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, which will make travel hard if not impossible in some of the outlying areas.
