Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton gestures as she walks on stage at a Democratic fundraising dinner featuring all three candidates in Las Vegas, Nevada January 6, 2016. Tonight, is a victory for the grassroots.
Despite a disappointing second place finish for the often bombastic real-estate mogul, Trump was gracious in conceding defeat.
“We have taken the first step, but an important step, to winning the nomination”, Rubio said to his supporters in Des Moines, according to AP.
Republican turnout hit a record high. But Clinton treated it as a victory.
The former secretary of state declared victory overnight in the contest against Bernie Sanders, and the party – without officially declaring her the victor – showed Clinton had an insurmountable lead over the Vermont senator.
“Wow, what a night, an unbelievable night”.
“I feel like it’s part of being American as you get the chance to do this, you get the chance to say what you believe in, and have a voice and vote”. And the party has asked the campaigns for help in getting a tally for those missing results.
Clinton’s victory in Iowa shores up her footing somewhat heading into the next contest – with even a narrow Iowa win under her belt, a potential loss in New Hampshire won’t be quite as painful.
Sanders, meanwhile, took shots at the “political establishment”, “the economic establishment” and “the media establishment”.
“He is the breath of fresh air in the political process”, said Amelia Mohr, a Sanders supporter.
“It is rare that we have the opportunity we do now, to have a real contest of ideas, to really think hard about what the Democratic Party stands for and what we want the future of our country to look like”, she said. Martin O’Malley who barely registered on the democratic side has suspended his campaign and on the republican side, Mike Huckabee who was the big victor here eight years ago has suspended his campaign. They include former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Ohio Governor John Kasich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Right to ABC’s Jon Karl in des Moines.
In the first caucuses in the nation on February 1, Iowa voters chose Texas Sen.
Women, moderates, mainline Democrats and fans of President Obama’s policies were boosting Clinton in the Iowa caucuses.
