At least ten Indian Army personnel were trapped under snow in the early hours on Wednesday after an avalanche in Northern Siachen, Indian media reported. These deaths have mostly been on account of avalanches, landslides, frostbite, altitude sickness or heart failure. Until 1984, neither side had troops permanently stationed there.

The avalanche occurred today morning in the northern-most part of the 70 square km glacier that forms the tri-junction of India, Pakistan and China.

Jammu: Ten soldiers, including an officer, went missing on Wednesday after an avalanche hit them in Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region.

Last month, four Indian soldiers on foot patrol were killed by an avalanche in the Ladakh area of the Himalayan region.
