Apple’s future iPhone may feature long range wireless charging

Apple is reportedly working on wireless charging technology with partners that would charge iPhones and iPads from a distance. One of the technical headaches that Apple seeks to solve through the research is loss of power over distance, Bloomberg reports.

If Apple does add wireless charging, it’s unlikely to remove the traditional power cord as this will still be required for connecting to a Macbook or PC.

Charging: There’s a rumor going around that Apple wants to have wireless charging for its devices as early as 2017, reports Bloomberg.

Companies such as Samsung, Sony and Google already offer phones with wireless charging technology that requires placement on a charging plate. However, problems like metallic interference of aluminum phone cases and the decreased efficiency of wireless charging have held the tech back from widespread adoption. If Apple can find a way to allow users to charge their iOS devices more conveniently, it could result in a very compelling new feature. One is that multiple incompatible standards mean a particular charging mat won’t necessarily work with your device. Electric toothbrushes have been using wireless charging, which is sometimes also called inductive charging, for years.

In the face of analyst claims that we’ve finally reached peak iPhone, Apple’s interest in exploring new and innovative mobile technologies remains as vibrant as ever.

Whenever we put an iPad or iPhone on charge we are restricted to the cable length so it’s not much stress to leave it on a pad.

Right now, the best “wireless” charging phones don’t require a direct power connection but must be in contact with a mat or charger. The recall was sparked by the danger of the two-prong AC wall plug adapters breaking and shocking people who touch them, the California-based technology giant said in an online post.

Another Apple patent from the end of 2015 describes a charging method that allows metal transparent radio signals to pass through the iPhone’s metallic casing.
