John Scott is ‘more than welcome to be here,’ says Bettman

The NHL All-Star Game is different.

Reporters got right to the point with Jaromir Jagr at media day. He had a total of about 5 goals, in the total 285 games that he had played versus the 542 penalty minutes.

What a joke. Except, nobody’s laughing anymore. My wife is due with twins and we’ve had to relocate.

Look, Scott is the least talented player in this game.

Scott opened up about the whole saga in a great article for The Players’ Tribune. “I genuinely believe that when I’m on the ice, or even just the bench, I make my teammates feel safe to do what they do best”, he added.

Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic was particularly vocal, and said he’d be much more likely to watch Sunday’s three-on-three tournament with Scott in the lineup. “I’m a not very light guy, I’m nearly 275 pounds”.

But here are some things you may not have known: He is a Michigan Tech engineering graduate. The campaign got momentum, and wouldn’t you know it, he was voted into the game as the top vote getter in the Pacific Division.

Patrick McDermott/NHLI via Getty Images Alex Ovechkin claims he got hurt shoveling snow after last weekend’s blizzard.

Now, Scott’s story has gone across North America. And for some good reasons.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do Sunday.

The NHL has treated Scott like dog shit during this ordeal.

Someone asked what record means the most to him at this stage, when he sets some sort of mark almost every time he takes the ice. “It’s really a derogatory term”.

How popular is Scott’s return to the weekend? The league could have easily stopped this train long before it left the station. He said that a league representative called him and asked if he thought that his children would be proud. “Why not? He’s voted in”.

I don’t follow Scott like most probably do but I respect the shit out of him. “I’m going to enjoy it while I’m here, then go back to the real world”.

Scott has played for Minnesota, Chicago, the New York Rangers, Buffalo, San Jose and Arizona.

“He’s able to play both sides of the fence”, Subban said. “It’s nice to see it come to an end and enjoy the fruits of all that hardship that we dealt with”. That’s the case with Johnny. But getting there won’t be easy, as Jagr knows.

“The guy is like everybody else”.

“I don’t understand it”, Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo. “If the fans voted him in, he deserves to be here”. “Remember, I missed my first shot”. They’re always editing the lists because some guys don’t want to do certain events. Guys don’t want to do this or that. “Bunch of prima donnas here”, Scott said with a laugh.

The gathered media howled at that crack.

Despite this, Scott never stopped smiling, and managed to keep his positive attitude. “It’s been, I guess, a big success”. The All Star game is scheduled to be played Sunday, Ja… “I don’t know“, he said. “I just wanted to get my voice heard and just have it written my way”.

I’m not exactly big on fan votes for All-Star games and it appears I’m not alone. “A lot of this stuff is undeserving, what he’s received as far as treatment”. Having the best players here, having a good time, and it’s really about the market as well. “They will take it for what it is”, Scott said. “It’s obviously an anomaly”. I was 19, and to see all the superstars and I was in the starting lineup. Duchene credits a tip from Avs GM Joe Sakic, who suggested a curvier stick blade similar to the one he used as a player, for the uptick in goals. And he was serious.

“Well, that’s the question”, he said. “All right. Don’t move”. “Hold on. Everyone smile”.

MODERN ATHLETE: Washington coach Barry Trotz has been paying attention to all the different opinions on Cam Newton’s celebrations with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, so count him among those who has no problem with a player showing some personality. “That’s the rules. You’ve seen other teams make that decision”.

Then they made him tournament MVP.

He couldn’t stop smiling.

Scott also talked about how a league staffer tried to pressure him into skipping the All-Star Game.
