How and why AP called Clinton-Sanders race when it did

Bernie Sanders, her competitor for the nomination, has inked one such deal, netting a total of $1,000. “We’re ready to go in New Hampshire and we’re excited about the momentum we’re carrying into this great state”.

But Sanders still faces an uphill battle against Clinton, who has deep ties throughout the party’s establishment and a strong following among a more diverse electorate that plays a larger role in primary contests in February and March.

Bush attracted the lion’s share of the party’s traditional fundraisers, including Jewish funders like Fred Zeidman of Texas, Mel Sembler of Florida and Sam Fox of Missouri. His backers have been loyal until now, but it may be time for a reality check. The first post-Iowa tracking poll – via UMass Lowell/News7 – has him up over Cruz, 38%-14%, with Marco Rubio at 12%, Jeb Bush at 9%, John Kasich at 7%, and Chris Christie at 6%.

Several Republican candidates, all calling themselves conservatives but minus some of the harsher rhetoric employed by Cruz, are looking to New Hampshire to revive their campaigns after poor showings in the farm state of Iowa. Unlike past conservatives who found love in Iowa but fizzled fast, Cruz argued today that his campaign has staying power, resources and broad appeal.

“This was a mistake from our end, and for that I apologize to Dr Carson”, Cruz wrote. It’s also more flexible in terms of time.

Slick roads around Northern New York led about a dozen schools in the Plattsburgh area to keep their doors closed Wednesday.

Now that he has emerged as a front-runner, does Cruz reach out to the establishment’s Jewish wing of the party and make nice?

What will the Adelsons do?

On the Republican side, Cruz’s win provided a twist worthy of the topsy-turvy race. They were made possible by the 2014 Supreme Court decision, McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, which struck down a provision that limited the aggregate amount one individual could give during an election cycle. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., but have so far refrained from spending the tens of millions to fund political action committees not directly affiliated with candidates.

Top supporters say the south is critically important in this election.

With Cruz and Rubio still viable, don’t expect an Adelson determination just yet. Whether you spend a few minutes in line at a polling place to cast your votes in a secretive ritual of ticking off names on a ballot, or gather to spend a few hours in a sometimes raucous room with fellow Democrats or Republicans in a process that may resemble more closely a miniature version of those national gatherings, the outcome is selection of state delegates who will collectively determine who will appear on the November ballots across the country.

Does Bernie do foreign policy?

But he and fellow surrogate Mark Foster, of the band Foster the People, said they planned to continue to stump for Sanders, with Nevada the next state in their sights. Sanders has served 34 years in elective office, a quarter of a century of that in Congress. Clinton came to Washington just two years after Sanders, first as first lady and then as a senator from NY and as secretary of state.

Mrs Clinton celebrated her narrow win in Iowa and said she expected a tough fight in New Hampshire, noting she will be campaigning in the “backyard” of Mr Sanders, a Vermont senator.

Or will she instead confront the challenge she admitted when she told Blitzer on Tuesday that she has “some work to do” to attract the young voters who are overwhelmingly supporting Sanders?
