Apple reportedly working on new wireless charging tech for iOS devices

Apple could build the charger point into Macs so your iPhone charges whenever you sit down at your computer.

iDigitalTimes requested a comment from Apple regarding the possibility of a wireless charging feature for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but we have not received a response yet.

After years of covering Apple patents on wireless charging it appears that Apple may be working on a new wireless charging system for some time in 2017. Some of the groundwork for Apple’s plans is already in place. As far back as 2010, Apple applied for a patent to use an iMac as a wireless charging hub for distances of 1 meter. Apple also now uses induction wireless charging in one of its devices, the Apple Watch. You might just need to be within a few feet of the charger for your phone to charge. With the iPhone still accounting for the lion’s share of Apple’s quarterly revenue, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that a good deal of Apple’s R&D has a decidedly iPhone-oriented approach.

Commonly seen devices that support wireless charging today, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S6 smartphone, have to be placed on a special mat to be charged. The company is said to be working on the technology with its partners in the USA and Asia. The company expected the fall of iPhone sales this quarter, compared to the same quarter previous year, confirmed Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook on a conference call with analysts.

Wireless-charging still feels like it’s a long ways off, but if anybody can take a poorly thought out concept and find a way to make it work, it’s Apple.

The current smartphones with wireless charging feature require users to place their handset on a charging mat or other devices.
