The Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange was the only other New Jersey hospital to earn a national ranking, finishing No. 3 overall for rehabilitation. – Mayo Clinic today has been named one of the best hospitals nationwide by U.S. News and World Report.

Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg is the 10 best hospital in Pennsylvania, U.S. News & World Report says. A handful of the specialties are ranked exclusively on these reputational results.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, based in New York City, is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive hospitals and a leading provider of inpatient, ambulatory and preventive care in all areas of medicine. The magazine measures patient volume, risk-adjusted survival rates and adequacy of nurse staffing, among other indicators. No hospital ranked as a high performer in each of four rating systems analyzed, and the researchers recommended that patients look at the methodology of rankings to determine their value. “Our staff deliver the most advanced treatments to patients in need and conduct scientific research that brings hope to those around the world touched by cancer”. But to make the U.S. News lists, hospitals must show exceptional performance in numerous categories.

Common care gauges medical quality and patient safety on “things hospitals see every day, ” Harder said, including three types of surgeries – heart bypass, hip replacement and knee replacement – and two long-term illnesses, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

“My take is that rankings like U.S. News and Leapfrog are a good place to start, but they’re not the whole picture”, Jha said.

The specialties in which the rankings fell include cancer, (down from 27th to 39th), gynecology (down from 15th to 29th) and urology (down from 33rd to 40th). It is still important, he said, for people to seek out the opinions of their primary care physicians and others in the community who may have recently been admitted for hospital care. Purchasing the logo does not affect future rankings, according to a U.S. News spokesperson.
